Have you ever wondered how the people of Mumbai allow themselves to live? If the rich and middle class pay high rents, how are the lower middle classes and the poor? In a city like Mumbai, where rents are known to be very high, the government had to intervene. They formulated the Bombay Rents, Hotel and Lodging House Rat Control Act, also known as the Maharashtra Rent Control Act. “Where a lessor intends to lease to its employee premises or parts of premises owned by it, the lessor and the employee may enter into a written agreement to create a contract for the rental of services in respect of such premises or part thereof; and regardless of what is contained in this law, the lease thus created remains in force to the lessor during the term of service or employment of the tenant,” the law states. In areas where the provisions of the law are applicable, calculating a rent higher than the standard rent is illegal. . . .
